How do I type Urdu on an English keyboard?

The course uses a phonetic layout. Each Urdu letter sits on the English key with a similar sound. So A types ا and B types ب.

Here is the home row, where you start in Lesson 1:

A ا S س D د F ف G گ H ھ J ج K ک L ل ; ؛

See the full key chart on the Urdu typing test page.

Do I need an Urdu keyboard installed?

No. Use your normal English keyboard. If you already have a phonetic Urdu keyboard installed, that usually works too.

Why does the layout matter?

Other layouts, like the Windows Urdu keyboard and InPage, put letters in different places. If a job or exam uses one of them, practise on that layout as well. Ask before you choose.

What is the difference between Roman Urdu typing and this course?

Roman Urdu typing

You write Urdu words with English letters, like “kya haal hai”. A tool turns them into Urdu script.

This course

Each key always types one fixed Urdu letter. You learn the real layout, and your hands remember it.

How long does it take to learn Urdu typing?

It depends on how often you practise and where you start. There is no fixed time.

One rough guide: a practice site says 25 to 30 minutes a day can reach about 20 to 25 WPM in 3 to 4 weeks. Treat it as a guide, not a promise.

How often should I practise?

About 15 minutes a day works better than one long session a week. Short, regular practice builds muscle memory.

What does a simple 4-week plan look like?

This is our suggested plan. Move faster or slower to fit you.

WeekFocusGoal
1Lesson 1 and Lesson 2Know the home row without looking
2Lesson 3 and Lesson 4Reach the top row cleanly
3Lesson 5 and Lesson 6Cover the whole keyboard
4Lesson 7 and Lesson 8Type words and sentences at 95% accuracy
AfterLesson 9, the bonus lessons, and a weekly typing testBuild speed and stamina

How can I type faster and make fewer mistakes?

  1. Look at the screen, not the keys. Use the on-screen keyboard at first, then hide it.
  2. Put accuracy first. Aim for 95% before you push speed.
  3. Press Space after every word. Even when letters would join, or two words merge into one.
  4. Keep your hands relaxed. Fingers lightly curved, wrists straight.
  5. Keep going after a slip. Fix it and keep your rhythm. Do not stop the whole line.
  6. Repeat a lesson until you can finish it without looking down.
  7. Test once a week on the Urdu typing test and write down your score.

Which Urdu typing mistakes should I avoid?

MistakeExampleFix
Mixing look-alike lettersی and ے, or ہ and ھI types ی and Y types ے. O types ہ and H types ھ.
English punctuation. and ? instead of ۔ and ؟Use . for ۔ and Shift+/ for ؟. See Bonus 2.

Is this course good for government job typing tests?

It helps you build speed and accuracy. It is not an official exam and gives no certificate.

Check the job notice. Layouts, speed targets and error rules change from post to post. Practise on the layout the test uses, then take the Urdu typing test to check your pace. Our test page lists what to check before an exam.

Can I learn Urdu typing on my phone?

The course is built and tested for a computer keyboard. Phone typing may not be scored correctly, so use a computer for real practice.

No computer at home? Only 14% of Pakistani households owned a computer, laptop or tablet in the 2024-25 government survey (Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, reported by FAFEN). A school, library or training centre computer works.
